The historic object shown on the reverse of the 2026 America250 Declaration of Independence quarter is the Liberty Bell.
This quarter is one of five circulating quarters issued for the United States semiquincentennial. Its obverse honors Thomas Jefferson, the principal drafter of the Declaration of Independence, while its reverse presents the Liberty Bell as a symbol of American independence.
The Liberty Bell is associated with Philadelphia, where the Declaration of Independence was debated and adopted by the Second Continental Congress. The bell was cast in 1752 and became especially famous for its inscription calling for liberty throughout the land.
The Liberty Bell quarter should not be confused with the separate semiquincentennial gold pieces shaped like the bell. The quarter is a regular circulating denomination, while those special gold and silver pieces were produced as collectible issues.
