The alias appears in “The Convention,” the second episode of season 3, which originally aired on September 28, 2006. Michael and Dwight travel from Scranton to Philadelphia for the Northeastern Mid-Market Office Supply Convention, while Jim and Josh attend from the Stamford branch. Angela secretly follows Dwight and arrives at the hotel wearing dark glasses.
Jane Doe is a conventional placeholder name for an unidentified or anonymous woman. That makes it an especially dry and Angela-like choice: she wants to conceal her identity, but selects the least imaginative anonymous name possible. She asks for a key under that name and waits in Dwight’s room, hoping to surprise him.
The scene also creates one of the episode’s jokes. Jim obtains a key to Dwight’s room as part of his prank, opens the door, and mistakes the obscured Angela for a prostitute Dwight ordered. Viewers sometimes remember the alias as belonging to another character or another convention storyline, but Jane Doe is specifically Angela’s hotel name in “The Convention.”
