On the classic Monopoly board, what number space is Jail?

The story behind the answer

On the classic Monopoly board, Jail is space 10.

Jail is one of the board's four corner spaces, positioned between St. James Place and Connecticut Avenue. A player can arrive there by landing on the space, drawing a card that sends them there, or rolling doubles three consecutive times.

The corner has two functions. A player who merely lands on Jail is visiting and normally remains free to move on the next turn. A player sent to Jail is confined there and must leave by rolling doubles, using a Get Out of Jail Free card, or paying the usual fee.

The Jail corner is separate from the Just Visiting section, even though both appear on the same printed space. This distinction is a common source of confusion: landing on the Jail space does not automatically imprison a player. The board's numbered sequence starts with GO as space 0, making Jail the tenth numbered location in the standard layout.
