On Spain’s flag, the yellow middle stripe is twice as tall as each red stripe.
The Spanish flag has three horizontal stripes: red at the top, yellow in the middle, and red at the bottom. The yellow band occupies double the height of either red band, creating the distinctive 1:2:1 stripe arrangement.
Spain’s constitutional flag also carries the national coat of arms toward the hoist side of the yellow stripe. The arms include symbols linked to historic kingdoms, the crowned shield, and the Pillars of Hercules with the motto “Plus Ultra.” Civil flags may appear without the arms.
The modern color arrangement descends from a naval ensign selected in 1785 under King Charles III. The nickname La Rojigualda combines words associated with red and the traditional yellow dye color gualda. A frequent mistake is to assume all three stripes are equal, as they are on many horizontal triband flags.
