On "Seinfeld", what is Newman's job?

The story behind the answer

On “Seinfeld,” Newman’s job is working as a mailman, or more precisely, a letter carrier for the United States Postal Service.

Newman’s occupation is first revealed in “The Old Man,” where his postal job becomes part of the show’s running comedy about bureaucracy, junk mail, and the power of the Post Office. He often takes pride in the importance of mail delivery, even though he is also portrayed as lazy, dishonest, and willing to hide or withhold mail when it benefits him.

His job drives several major storylines. In “The Bottle Deposit,” Newman uses a U.S. Mail truck while trying to profit from transporting bottles to Michigan. In “The Andrea Doria,” he hides bags of mail in Jerry’s storage space while hoping to transfer to Hawaii. “The Junk Mail” also turns the Postal Service into the target of Kramer’s anti-mail campaign.

Newman is sometimes confused with a security guard because the series depicts the Post Office as a powerful institution with its own enforcement staff. However, Newman himself is a postal worker and mail carrier, not a guard, plumber, or bus driver.
