On "Seinfeld", what is Elaine's last name?

The story behind the answer

On "Seinfeld," Elaine's last name is Benes. Elaine Benes is played by Julia Louis-Dreyfus and is one of Jerry's three closest friends, alongside George Costanza and Cosmo Kramer. She is also Jerry's former girlfriend, although their relationship becomes a lasting friendship after they break up.

Elaine joined the regular ensemble after the pilot, when the show's producers decided to replace the original waitress character, Claire, with a stronger female lead. Her first filmed episode was "Male Unbonding," and she quickly became central to the series' stories, workplace plots, romantic misadventures, and distinctive comic catchphrases.

A common mix-up is confusing Elaine's surname with those of the other main characters: George is Costanza, Kramer is usually called Kramer, and Jerry is playing a fictionalized version of himself. The spelling "Benes" is also sometimes written incorrectly as "Beneš" or "Bennett," but the series uses Benes.
