The episode’s plot was inspired by a real-life situation involving co-creator Larry David, who bought an expensive car for his own father. Viewers sometimes remember Morty as being impeached solely over owning the car; technically, the accusation was embezzlement, and the impeachment followed the board’s investigation and vote.
