On “Seinfeld,” Jerry was caught making out during “Schindler’s List” at the Regency theater. The incident occurs in “The Raincoats,” a two-part fifth-season episode, when Jerry and his girlfriend Rachel finally get time alone and go to see Steven Spielberg’s Holocaust drama.
Instead of watching the film, Jerry and Rachel spend essentially the entire screening kissing. Newman happens to see them and later gleefully reports the offense to Jerry’s parents, Morty and Helen. Their outrage makes the situation especially uncomfortable because Jerry is Jewish and the film is a solemn account of the Holocaust.
The episode deliberately turns the mismatch between the movie and Jerry’s behavior into dark comedy. “Schindler’s List” had been released only a few months earlier, making the reference immediately recognizable to viewers in 1994. The fictionalized Regency theater was associated with the show’s Manhattan movie outings; the real Upper West Side cinema was later closed and demolished. “The Raincoats” first aired on April 28, 1994.
