On “Seinfeld,” the Soup Nazi suspended Elaine from eating his soup for one year.
The ban occurs in “The Soup Nazi,” the sixth episode of Season 7, which aired in 1995. Elaine ignores Jerry’s carefully explained ordering rules, takes too long, makes small talk, bangs on the counter, and mocks the soup selection. Her final offense is an exaggerated Al Pacino impression, after which Yev Kassem declares, “No soup for you! Come back, one year!”
A common mix-up is confusing Elaine’s ban with the Soup Nazi’s general catchphrase. He frequently throws customers out with “No soup for you,” but Elaine receives the specifically stated one-year suspension. The episode later gives Elaine revenge: after obtaining his secret recipes, she distributes them, helping destroy his business. The character was inspired by Al Yeganeh, a real New York soup vendor whose strict service style influenced the story.
