On "Seinfeld", George gets a job working for which baseball team?

The story behind the answer

On “Seinfeld,” George Costanza gets a job working for the New York Yankees.

George is hired as an Assistant to the Traveling Secretary in “The Opposite,” the final episode of the show’s fifth season. His career has been unstable up to that point: he has worked in real estate, spent periods unemployed, and repeatedly lost jobs through deception, incompetence, or spectacularly bad judgment.

The Yankees hire is one of the show’s clearest examples of George succeeding by doing the opposite of what he normally would. After deciding that his instincts have ruined his life, George stops hiding his failures during an interview. He openly tells George Steinbrenner about his past jobs and even criticizes Steinbrenner’s leadership. Instead of being rejected, he is hired on the spot.

The position becomes George’s longest-running job on the series. It leads to several memorable plots, including his attempt to manage his secretary Ada, his advice about cotton uniforms in “The Chaperone,” and his eventual dismissal after an incident involving a team executive. The New Jersey Nets, New York Knicks, and New York Mets are all plausible-sounding distractions, but George works for the Yankees.
