On November 15, 1887, in which Wisconsin town was Georgia O’Keeffe born?
Answer
Sun Prairie
Answer
Sun Prairie
Georgia O’Keeffe was born in Sun Prairie, Wisconsin, on November 15, 1887.
She was the second of seven children in a farming family. Her parents, Francis Calyxtus O’Keeffe and Ida Totto, raised their children near Sun Prairie, a small community northeast of Madison. O’Keeffe began art lessons while still young and later pursued formal training in Chicago and New York.
Sun Prairie is sometimes confused with Madison because Madison was the nearest major city and the capital of Wisconsin. O’Keeffe’s birthplace is also distinct from the places most associated with her mature career: New York, where she became known through Alfred Stieglitz, and New Mexico, whose landscapes shaped her later work. The Sun Prairie location remains an important part of biographies and museum accounts of the artist’s early life.
