On "Friends", who played the character Gunther?

James Michael Tyler played Gunther on Friends.

Gunther was the manager and barista at Central Perk, the coffee shop where the six main characters regularly gathered. Although he usually remained in the background, the character became memorable because of his unrequited love for Rachel Green and his jealousy of Ross.

Tyler was cast partly because he was the only extra auditioning who knew how to operate the cappuccino machine on the Central Perk set. His artificially blond hair also became part of Gunther’s look after a hairstylist friend experimented with Tyler’s hair shortly before his first appearance.

Gunther first appeared in the 1994 episode “The One with the Sonogram at the End” and remained a recurring character through the 2004 finale. Tyler appeared in 148 episodes, making Gunther the most frequently seen recurring character outside the six leads. Tyler died in 2021 at age 59 after publicly discussing his prostate-cancer diagnosis.
