On “Friends,” Joey and Chandler are often seen playing foosball in their apartment. The table becomes one of the apartment’s defining features and a recurring source of competition between the roommates.
The foosball table arrives after Joey accidentally breaks the kitchen table by sitting on it in “The One with the Dozen Lasagnas.” Rather than buy a conventional replacement, Joey and Chandler choose a foosball table and decide they can eat at the counter or over the sink. That decision perfectly captures their impulsive, playful lifestyle.
The table is used for friendly matches, arguments, wagers, and attempts to settle personal disputes. It also appears in “The One Where Joey Moves Out,” when Chandler and Joey play for ownership of the apartment’s belongings, and in “The Last One,” when Monica breaks it open to rescue the chick and duck trapped inside. Foosball is sometimes called table football, but it is distinct from air hockey or table tennis.
