Answer
Miller Park, Milwaukee
Answer
Miller Park, Milwaukee
On April 6, 2001, President George W. Bush threw a ceremonial first pitch at Milwaukee’s new Miller Park.
The occasion was the Milwaukee Brewers’ first regular-season game at the retractable-roof stadium. The Brewers hosted the Cincinnati Reds, the same team that had helped close the old County Stadium the previous year. Miller Park officially opened with a 5–4 Brewers victory.
There is a small detail that can cause confusion: Brewers owner and commissioner Bud Selig also threw a ceremonial first pitch that evening, before Bush’s toss. Bush’s pitch bounced toward Brewers manager Davey Lopes, reportedly because the president was wearing a bulletproof vest beneath his jacket. The venue was later renamed American Family Field in 2021, but it was called Miller Park in 2001.
Miller Park replaced County Stadium as the Brewers’ home and became known for its fan-shaped retractable roof, a feature designed to protect games from Milwaukee’s unpredictable weather.
