Colombo is a major capital city of Sri Lanka.

Located on Sri Lanka’s western coast, Colombo is the island’s largest city and its best-known commercial and financial center. The city grew around a natural harbor and became especially important during Portuguese, Dutch, and British rule. Those colonial periods left visible marks on Colombo’s architecture, place names, religious buildings, and food culture.

The wording can cause confusion because Sri Lanka’s official legislative capital is Sri Jayawardenepura Kotte, a nearby city. Administrative functions began shifting there in 1978, while Colombo remained the country’s executive and judicial center and its de facto commercial capital.
