Classical mechanics is the broad framework that describes the motion of macroscopic objects using concepts such as force, mass, momentum, energy, and acceleration. Its earliest major formulation is Newtonian mechanics, built around Newton's three laws of motion and his law of universal gravitation.

Newton published the laws in Philosophiæ Naturalis Principia Mathematica in 1687. Later scientists broadened the field: Euler developed important treatments of rigid-body motion, while Lagrange and Hamilton created powerful reformulations based on energy and generalized coordinates. These approaches are still classified as classical mechanics because they describe the same non-quantum physical domain.

“Classical” does not mean obsolete. The framework remains highly accurate for everyday objects, machines, projectiles, spacecraft, and planetary motion when speeds are well below light speed and quantum effects are negligible. Relativity becomes necessary at extreme speeds or gravitational fields, while quantum mechanics is needed at atomic scales.
