Nepal is located on which continent?

The story behind the answer

Nepal is located on the continent of Asia. It lies in South Asia, between China to the north and India to the south, east, and west.

Nepal is best known geographically for its position in the Himalayas. Mount Everest, the highest point on Earth above sea level, is on the Nepal–China border. The country also contains fertile lowlands in the south, known as the Terai, so Nepal is not entirely mountainous.

A common mix-up is confusing a continent with a subregion: South Asia is a region within Asia, alongside countries such as India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Bhutan, and Sri Lanka. Nepal is also part of the Indian subcontinent in a geographic and cultural sense, but its continent is Asia.

Nepal’s location has shaped its history. It developed as a meeting point between South Asian and Tibetan cultures, and Lumbini in southern Nepal is traditionally recognized as the birthplace of Gautama Buddha.
