Nearly every scene of Fight Club features a Starbucks coffee cup. Director David Fincher used the cups as a recurring visual joke and as a reminder of the consumer culture criticized by the film.

Fight Club, released in 1999, follows an unnamed narrator and Tyler Durden as their underground fighting group grows into the destructive Project Mayhem. Its story attacks advertising, corporate identity, furniture culture, and the idea that buying products can create a meaningful life. Starbucks became a particularly effective symbol because its cafés and branded cups represented the increasingly visible spread of corporate consumer culture.

Fincher reportedly said that Starbucks cups appeared in every shot, but the finished film does not literally show one in every scene. “Nearly every scene” is therefore the fair version of the trivia claim. Some cups are obvious, while others are tucked into desks, tables, offices, or background compositions.

The joke was not ordinary paid product placement. Starbucks reportedly allowed the cups but objected to its store being destroyed during the film’s climax.
