Near which California city is the big-wave surf break known as Mavericks located?
Answer
Half Moon Bay
Answer
Half Moon Bay
The big-wave surf break known as Mavericks is located near Half Moon Bay, California.
Mavericks lies offshore from the coastal community of Princeton-by-the-Sea, near Pillar Point Harbor and the city of Half Moon Bay. Under suitable winter conditions, deep-water swells interact with an unusual underwater rock formation and produce exceptionally large, powerful waves.
The break became internationally famous after local surfers began riding it in the 1990s. Its name is commonly linked to a dog named Maverick that accompanied surfers to the area, although the exact naming story has been retold in several versions.
Mavericks is not in Santa Cruz or Malibu, two other well-known California surfing locations. The break’s offshore position, cold water and irregular conditions make it a specialist big-wave venue rather than a routine beach break.
