Nassau is the capital city of The Bahamas.

The city lies on New Providence Island and is also the country’s largest urban center, commercial hub, and main tourism gateway. Nassau’s location in the northern Caribbean, close to Florida and the broader Atlantic travel routes, helped it develop into a major port and resort destination.

The settlement was founded in 1670 as Charles Town and was rebuilt and renamed Nassau in 1695. Its name honors William III, who was also known as William of Orange-Nassau. Nassau became especially famous during the early eighteenth century, when pirates used the area as a base during the period sometimes called the Golden Age of Piracy.

A common mix-up is treating The Bahamas as a single island. It is an archipelagic country made up of more than 3,000 islands, cays, and islets.
