Namibia's Skeleton Coast is part of which coastal desert?
Answer
Namib Desert
Answer
Namib Desert
Namibia's Skeleton Coast is part of the Namib Desert.
The Skeleton Coast is the northern section of Namibia's Atlantic coastline, immediately south of Angola. It is generally understood as part of the Namib Desert's coastal zone, although the name is sometimes used more broadly for much of the desert coast. The region is famous for shipwrecks, powerful surf, fog, dunes, and an exceptionally harsh climate.
The cold Benguela Current drives coastal upwelling and helps produce dense sea fogs. Rainfall is extremely scarce, often no more than about 10 millimetres annually, yet fog provides crucial moisture for specialized plants and animals. Wind, salt, and isolation make the shoreline difficult for people to cross or inhabit.
The name refers both to whale and seal bones once left by whaling and to the skeletal remains of ships wrecked by hidden rocks, fog, and heavy surf. A common mistake is choosing the Kalahari Desert, which lies inland and is not a coastal desert.
