Name the Roman hero known for his twelve labors, son of Jupiter.

The story behind the answer

The Roman hero known for his twelve labors and described as the son of Jupiter is Hercules. He is the Roman form of the Greek hero Heracles, born to Jupiter—called Zeus in Greek myth—and the mortal woman Alcmena.

The labors were imposed by King Eurystheus after Hercules, driven temporarily mad by Juno, killed his wife and children in a traditional version of the story. His tasks included defeating the Nemean Lion, capturing the Erymanthian Boar, obtaining the Golden Apples of the Hesperides, and bringing Cerberus from the underworld.

The familiar total of twelve developed because Eurystheus rejected two of Hercules’ original ten tasks: the Hydra was discounted because his nephew Iolaus helped, and the Augean stables because Hercules accepted payment. Theseus, Romulus, and Aeneas are also important legendary figures, but none is the hero of the twelve labors.
