Name the Norse god of thunder.

The story behind the answer

The Norse god of thunder is Thor.

Thor is one of the best-known gods in Norse mythology and is associated with thunder, storms, strength, protection, fertility, and agriculture. His name comes from the Proto-Germanic theonym Þunraz, meaning “thunder,” linking him to related Germanic figures such as Thunor in Old English and Donar in Old High German.

Thor’s most famous possession is Mjölnir, a powerful hammer made by dwarven craftsmen. In the surviving myths, he uses it to defend the gods and humans from jötnar, often translated as giants. He is commonly portrayed as red-bearded, immensely strong, and quick-tempered, but also as a protector of ordinary people.

Thor is often confused with Odin because both are major Norse gods, while Loki is Thor’s sometimes-companion and frequent source of trouble rather than the thunder god. Balder is associated with beauty, goodness, and tragedy. In later popular culture, Marvel’s superhero draws heavily on Thor’s name and hammer but is not identical to the religious figure described in medieval Norse sources.
