Name the mother of Thor.

The story behind the answer

The mother of Thor is Jörð, the Norse personification of Earth and a goddess associated with the natural world.

Jörð is named as Thor’s mother in both the Poetic Edda and the Prose Edda. Her name is also the ordinary Old Norse word for “earth” or “land,” so she represents the ground itself as well as a divine figure. In poetic language, Thor is called “Jörð’s son,” a recurring description in skaldic poetry.

Jörð is also known by names such as Fjörgyn and, probably, Hlóðyn. The sources describe her relationship with Odin, but Norse genealogy is not always presented consistently. The Prose Edda calls her Odin’s daughter and wife in one passage, while other traditions describe her as a giantess or earth goddess. That complexity explains why she should not be casually equated with Frigg.

Sif, by contrast, is Thor’s wife, not his mother. Freyja is a separate goddess associated with love, fertility, seiðr, and battle. Frigg is Odin’s wife and the mother of Baldr in the best-known accounts.
