Nairobi is the capital of which country?

Nairobi is the capital of Kenya. It is located in the south-central part of the country at an elevation of roughly 1,795 metres, giving it a relatively mild climate compared with many other cities near the equator.

Nairobi began in 1898 as a railway settlement and depot on the Uganda–Kenya Railway, then being built by British colonial authorities. Its highland location offered fresh water, cooler temperatures and a useful stopping point between the port of Mombasa and the interior. The settlement grew rapidly and replaced Mombasa as Kenya's capital in 1907.

The city's name is derived from the Maasai phrase Enkare Nyirobi, commonly translated as “place of cool waters.” Nairobi is also an important financial and diplomatic centre for East Africa. A frequent surprise is that Nairobi National Park, home to wildlife including lions and giraffes, lies within the capital's metropolitan boundaries. Kenya became independent in 1963, and Nairobi remained its national capital.
