Moomin creator Tove Jansson was born in Helsinki, Finland’s capital, on 9 August 1914. At the time, Helsinki belonged to the Grand Duchy of Finland, an autonomous part of the Russian Empire.

Jansson grew up in a notably artistic Swedish-speaking Finnish family. Her father, Viktor Jansson, was a sculptor, and her mother, Signe Hammarsten-Jansson, was a graphic designer and illustrator. Tove became an accomplished painter, illustrator, novelist and comic-strip author as well as the creator of the Moomins.
