Mitsubishi, Sony and Toyota are all companies with roots in what country?

The story behind the answer

Mitsubishi, Sony, and Toyota are all companies with roots in Japan. Although they operate globally today, each began as a Japanese enterprise and became associated with the country’s industrial and technological rise.

Mitsubishi traces its origins to a shipping company founded by Yataro Iwasaki in 1870. The Mitsubishi name later became associated with a broad group of companies, including firms involved in automobiles, electronics, finance, and heavy industry.

Sony began in Tokyo in 1946 as Tokyo Tsushin Kenkyujo, or Tokyo Telecommunications Engineering Corporation. It adopted the name Sony in 1958 and grew into one of Japan’s most prominent electronics and entertainment companies. Toyota developed from Toyoda Automatic Loom Works before Toyota Motor Corporation was established in 1937.

A common mix-up is treating the three companies as branches of one corporation. They are separate Japanese companies with different founders and histories. Their shared connection is national origin, not common ownership.
