Minsk became the capital of what independent nation in 1991?
Answer
Belarus
Answer
Belarus
Minsk became the capital of the independent Republic of Belarus in 1991. The city had already served as the capital of the Byelorussian Soviet Socialist Republic, but Belarus became independent when the Soviet Union dissolved.
Belarus declared independence on August 25, 1991, after the failed coup attempt in Moscow accelerated the breakup of the USSR. Minsk therefore continued its established role as the country’s political center rather than becoming a newly selected capital. The city is located in the country’s central region and remains its largest urban area.
Minsk has a much older history than modern Belarus. It was first mentioned in historical sources in the 11th century and later became an important city within the Grand Duchy of Lithuania, the Polish–Lithuanian Commonwealth, and the Russian Empire. A frequent confusion is to associate Minsk with Russia because it was part of the Soviet Union; since 1991, however, it has been the capital of sovereign Belarus.
