Mike Patton, formerly of Faith No More, collaborated with which drummer on Fantomas projects? The answer is Dave Lombardo. Lombardo, best known as the co-founder and longtime drummer of Slayer, joined Patton in Fantômas, an experimental metal supergroup formed in California in 1998.
Fantômas also featured guitarist Buzz Osborne of the Melvins and bassist Trevor Dunn of Mr. Bungle. The group’s music was unusually theatrical and fragmented, often using abrupt changes, noise, unusual percussion, and cinematic or comic-book-inspired ideas rather than conventional verse-and-chorus songwriting.
Lombardo’s precise but aggressive drumming made him a natural fit for Patton’s unpredictable compositions. The band’s self-titled debut appeared in 1999, followed by albums including The Director’s Cut, which reworked film themes, and Delìrium Còrdia, a single extended composition. Patton and Lombardo later collaborated again in the hardcore supergroup Dead Cross, although that band is separate from Fantômas.
