Answer
Terrestrial planet
Mars is classified as what type of rocky planet? Mars is a terrestrial planet.
A terrestrial planet is a relatively dense world composed mainly of rock and metal, with a solid surface and an internal structure divided into a crust, mantle and core. In the Solar System, Mercury, Venus, Earth and Mars are the four terrestrial planets.
Mars formed in the warmer inner region of the young Solar System, where lighter hydrogen-rich gases could not accumulate as they did around the giant planets. Its reddish appearance comes largely from iron minerals in the surface dust and rocks oxidizing, or rusting. Mars has a thin carbon-dioxide-dominated atmosphere, polar ice caps and enormous volcanoes, but it is not a gas or ice giant.
The term “rocky planet” is a useful everyday synonym, while “terrestrial planet” is the standard classification. Mars is not a dwarf planet: it is massive enough to be gravitationally rounded and is one of the eight planets recognized in the Solar System.
