Madagascar lies in which ocean?

The story behind the answer

Madagascar lies in the Indian Ocean.

The island sits off Africa’s southeastern coast, separated from Mozambique by the Mozambique Channel. It is the world’s fourth-largest island and is accompanied by smaller islands such as Nosy Be and Sainte-Marie. Its capital, Antananarivo, is inland on the central highlands rather than on the coast.

Madagascar’s position helped produce extraordinary endemic wildlife. The island separated from the African mainland tens of millions of years ago, and later geological history also connected it to the ancient landmass of Gondwana. Isolation allowed lemurs, many chameleons, and distinctive plant species to evolve in unusual forms.

The main geographic trap is the Southern Ocean: Madagascar is relatively far south, but it is still in the Indian Ocean. The island’s eastern shore faces open Indian Ocean waters, while its western shore faces the Mozambique Channel, which is itself part of the Indian Ocean region.
