Leonardo da Vinci's mechanical knight was designed to resemble what kind of figure?

The story behind the answer

Leonardo da Vinci's mechanical knight was designed to resemble a medieval knight.

Leonardo developed the figure around 1495 while working in Milan for Ludovico Sforza. The machine was built inside a suit of armor and used a system of pulleys, cables, and gears. Its movements reportedly included lifting its arms, moving its head, and opening and closing its jaw.

The original machine has not survived, and historians reconstructed its probable operation from Leonardo's drawings and notes. In 2002, roboticist Mark Rosheim built a working model based on those studies, demonstrating that the mechanism could perform several human-like movements.

The machine is commonly called Leonardo's robot, but that modern label can be misleading. Leonardo did not use the modern word robot, and the device was a mechanical automaton rather than an electronic machine or an autonomous artificial intelligence.
