Lime cordial supplies the drink’s concentrated sweet-and-tart lime flavour. A typical preparation uses clear, carbonated lemonade, a small measure of lime cordial and several dashes of bitters. The mixture may be served straight up or over ice, often with a lemon or lime slice as garnish.

The cordial is not the same as plain lime juice. Commercial lime cordial is sweetened and concentrated, so it balances the lemonade’s acidity while contributing a distinctive lime aroma. Using unsweetened lime juice instead produces a sharper, less traditional drink and usually changes the proportions needed.

Bitters provide colour, spice and aromatic complexity rather than the main citrus flavour. Angostura bitters are the familiar choice, and only a few dashes are normally needed. LLB is often described as a non-alcoholic cocktail, although bitters contain alcohol and the finished drink may contain a trace amount. Blackcurrant, elderflower and ginger cordials can make other refreshing drinks, but none is the classic cordial in lemon, lime and bitters.
