Lawrence of Arabia is based on the life of which British officer?

The story behind the answer

Lawrence of Arabia is based on the life of T. E. Lawrence, the British officer and writer best known as “Lawrence of Arabia.”

Thomas Edward Lawrence served as an intelligence officer and liaison during the Arab Revolt against the Ottoman Empire in the First World War. He worked with Arab forces led by Faisal bin Hussein and became associated with guerrilla campaigns, desert warfare, diplomacy, and the capture of Aqaba. His wartime experiences later formed the basis of Seven Pillars of Wisdom, a memoir that helped shape his public image.

David Lean’s 1962 film uses Lawrence’s life and memoir as source material but is not a documentary biography. Peter O’Toole plays Lawrence, with Omar Sharif as Sherif Ali and Alec Guinness as Prince Faisal. The film compresses events, combines or alters some figures, and presents a highly stylized portrait of Lawrence’s ambitions, relationships, and psychological strain.

The title can create another confusion: “Lawrence of Arabia” is a nickname, not his formal name or military rank. T. E. Lawrence later served under assumed names in the Royal Air Force and British Army, and he continued writing after the war.
