Khao mok gai is the Thai version of which rice dish?

The story behind the answer

Khao mok gai is the Thai version of chicken biryani.

The dish is a Thai-Muslim rice preparation in which chicken and seasoned rice are cooked together, allowing the grains to absorb the flavors of the curry and spices. Its name is often translated as “rice covered chicken,” a reference to the way the chicken is cooked with or beneath the rice rather than simply placed on top afterward.

Khao mok gai belongs to the wider biryani family associated with South Asian and Muslim culinary traditions, but Thai versions have their own seasoning balance and presentation. It is easy to confuse it with khao man gai, another Thai chicken-and-rice dish; khao man gai is related to Hainanese chicken rice and uses a different cooking tradition. Khao mok gai also has meat variations, including khao mok nuea, the Thai beef-biryani version.
