Juneau is the capital city of which U.S. state?
Answer
Alaska
Answer
Alaska
Juneau is the capital city of Alaska. It sits in Southeast Alaska along the Gastineau Channel, surrounded by the Coast Mountains and the waterways of the Alexander Archipelago.
Juneau became Alaska's capital in 1906, when the territorial government moved from Sitka. The change reflected Juneau's importance during the era when mining and the nearby goldfields made it a major population and commercial center. Alaska remained a U.S. territory until statehood in 1959, and Juneau continued as the state capital.
The modern City and Borough of Juneau was created in 1970 by combining the city of Juneau, the city of Douglas, and the surrounding borough. Its enormous municipal boundaries make it the largest U.S. state capital by area, even though its settled urban population is relatively small.
A frequent mix-up is choosing Anchorage, Alaska's largest city. Anchorage is the state's main population and business hub, but Juneau is the official capital. Juneau is also unusual because it has no road connection to the rest of Alaska or the continental road system; most visitors arrive by air or sea.
