JPMorgan Chase, one of the world's largest banks by market capitalization, was formed in 2000 when Chase Manhattan merged with which company?

The story behind the answer

JPMorgan Chase, one of the world's largest banks by market capitalization, was formed in 2000 when Chase Manhattan merged with J.P. Morgan & Co.

The merger was announced in September 2000 and created JPMorgan Chase & Co. Chase Manhattan brought a major commercial-banking franchise, while J.P. Morgan & Co. was known for investment banking, corporate finance, and a long history in American financial markets.

The combined company later expanded again. In 2004, JPMorgan Chase merged with Bank One, bringing Jamie Dimon into the leadership structure. In 2008, it acquired the deposits and selected assets of Washington Mutual during the financial crisis.

The name can be confusing because “J.P. Morgan” also refers to the historic banker John Pierpont Morgan and to later businesses using the Morgan name. The 2000 merger specifically joined Chase Manhattan and the corporate entity J.P. Morgan & Co.
