J.Crew originally sold its products through what medium?
Answer
Catalog
Answer
Catalog
J.Crew originally sold its products through a catalog.
The company’s roots reach back to Popular Merchandise, founded in 1947 by Mitchell Cinader and Saul Charles. Before the modern J.Crew identity emerged, the business sold clothing through the Popular Club Plan. Its major expansion came when it developed a mail-order catalog aimed at customers who wanted polished, preppy clothing without the prices associated with designer labels.
The first Popular Club Plan catalog was mailed in January 1983. That catalog operation became the foundation for the J.Crew brand, which was established in the same year. Catalog photography, fabric close-ups, and carefully styled outfits helped customers understand garments they could not see or try on in person.
J.Crew eventually added physical stores, beginning with a location at Manhattan’s South Street Seaport in 1989, and later built an internet business. Those channels can cause confusion, but they were later additions: catalog sales came first for the J.Crew brand. The printed catalog also became a major part of the company’s visual identity.
