Jammie Dodgers are named after which character from The Beano comics?

The story behind the answer

Jammie Dodgers are named after Roger the Dodger from The Beano comics.

The British biscuit brand takes its name from Roger, a comic-strip character known for devising “dodges” to avoid chores, rules, and responsibility. That mischievous idea fits the playful identity of a jam-filled biscuit marketed primarily to children and families.

Jammie Dodgers are shortcake biscuits with a raspberry- or strawberry-flavored jam filling, usually visible through an opening in the top biscuit. They were first manufactured in 1960 at the Crumpsall Biscuit Works of the Co-operative Society, and production later moved to Burton’s biscuit factory.

Roger the Dodger first appeared in The Beano in 1953, drawn by Ken Reid. He is easy to mix up with other Beano characters such as Dennis the Menace, Minnie the Minx, and Billy Whizz, but none of those characters supplied the brand’s name. “Jammie” refers to the jam center, while “Dodgers” points to Roger’s comic-strip persona.
