Jakarta is the capital of what country?

Jakarta is the capital of Indonesia. Located on the northwest coast of Java, it is the country's largest city and its principal political, financial, commercial, and cultural center.

The city has carried several important names. It was known as Sunda Kelapa during the era of the Sunda Kingdom, became Jayakarta after a sixteenth-century conquest, and was renamed Batavia under Dutch rule beginning in 1619. After Indonesia's independence, Jakarta became the official name and the center of the new republic.

Jakarta is also unusual because it has province-level administrative status while functioning as a major national capital. The metropolitan area, commonly called Jabodetabek, extends far beyond the special capital region and is one of Southeast Asia's largest urban concentrations.

Indonesia has been developing Nusantara in East Kalimantan as a planned future capital, which can cause confusion in newer geography questions. Jakarta remains the country's functioning capital and the seat of many national institutions, even as the relocation project proceeds.
