Islamabad is the capital of Pakistan.

Islamabad is a planned city in northern Pakistan, located beside the Margalla Hills and immediately northwest of Rawalpindi. The city was selected and developed as Pakistan’s new national capital during the 1960s, replacing Karachi, which had served as the country’s first capital after independence.

Construction began in 1960, and Islamabad formally became the capital in 1967. Its layout was designed by Greek architect Constantinos Apostolou Doxiadis, with separate zones for government offices, housing, commerce and diplomacy. The city is known for wide avenues, substantial green space and landmarks such as Faisal Mosque and the Pakistan Monument.

Rawalpindi is sometimes mistaken for the capital because it served as the country’s de facto administrative center while Islamabad was being built. The two cities now form a closely connected metropolitan area, but they remain separate cities: Islamabad is the federal capital, while Rawalpindi is an important military and commercial center.
