Instagram Notes, introduced in 2022, allow short text posts of up to 60 characters. The feature was designed as a lightweight way to share a thought, status, question, or song-related message without making a full feed post or Story.
Notes appear at the top of the Instagram inbox, above direct-message conversations, and are visible to followers who follow the author back or to members of the author’s Close Friends list. Each Note remains visible for 24 hours, echoing the temporary nature of Instagram Stories. People can reply to a Note, and that response opens a direct-message conversation.
The 60-character limit is easy to confuse with limits from other Instagram features, captions, or competing social platforms. Notes are deliberately much shorter: their purpose is to prompt quick conversations rather than function as miniature blog posts. Instagram began testing the feature in mid-2022 and rolled it out more broadly later that year.
