In 'Wuthering Heights', what is the name of the Lintons' home?

The story behind the answer

In Wuthering Heights, the Lintons’ home is Thrushcross Grange. The elegant house stands in contrast to the rough, exposed setting of Wuthering Heights and represents the refinement and social respectability associated with the Linton family.

Catherine Earnshaw first encounters the Lintons after she and Heathcliff look through a window at the household. When Catherine is injured by the Lintons’ dog, she remains at Thrushcross Grange for several weeks, during which time she is treated as a young lady and becomes more closely connected to the Linton world. Her later marriage to Edgar Linton deepens the divide between her social position and Heathcliff’s.

Penistone Crags is a dramatic landscape near Wuthering Heights, not a residence. Wuthering Heights is the Earnshaw family home and later Heathcliff’s property. “The Grange” may sound like a shortened form, but the novel’s canonical name is specifically Thrushcross Grange.
