In world geography, what is the capital city of Mongolia?

The story behind the answer

Ulaanbaatar is the capital and largest city of Mongolia.

The city stands in north-central Mongolia on the Tuul River, at an elevation of roughly 1,300 metres. It is the country’s political, economic, cultural, and transport centre, and most of Mongolia’s population lives in or around the capital.

Ulaanbaatar began as a mobile Buddhist monastic settlement in 1639. It moved repeatedly before becoming permanently established at its present location in 1778. Its name means “Red Hero” in Mongolian and was adopted in 1924.

The city is often confused with Astana, Bishkek, or Tashkent, the capitals of Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, and Uzbekistan. Ulaanbaatar is notable for its severe continental climate, with very cold winters and warm summers.
