In William Gibson's 'Neuromancer', the cyberspace hacker protagonist is named Case.
Case is a former computer hacker, or "console cowboy," living in the criminal underworld of Chiba City, Japan. After he steals from an employer, his nervous system is deliberately damaged, leaving him unable to enter the matrix—the novel's virtual-reality cyberspace. A mysterious employer later offers to restore his ability in exchange for taking part in a dangerous heist.
Case's mission brings him together with Molly Millions, an augmented mercenary, and Armitage, a troubled former soldier. Their operation is connected to powerful artificial intelligences, including Wintermute and Neuromancer. Case's skill is navigating digital systems, while Molly handles much of the physical danger.
Published in 1984, the novel helped define cyberpunk and popularized imagery associated with cyberspace, hackers, artificial intelligence, and corporate power. Dixie is a stored consciousness, Wintermute is an AI, and Molly is a mercenary—not the protagonist.
