In which year was the Treaty of Versailles signed after World War I?

The story behind the answer

The Treaty of Versailles was signed in 1919 after World War I.

The treaty was signed on 28 June 1919 in the Hall of Mirrors at the Palace of Versailles, exactly five years after the assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand. It formally ended the state of war between Germany and the Allied Powers, although fighting had already stopped with the 1918 armistice.

The agreement required Germany to accept responsibility for the war’s damage under Article 231, reduce its armed forces, surrender territory, and pay reparations. It also created the League of Nations as part of the postwar international settlement.

The Treaty of Versailles was one of several peace treaties negotiated after the war. It did not itself create World War II, but its political and economic consequences, including German resentment and instability, became important in later European history.
