The film is a live-action television prequel that explores how Fred, Daphne, Velma, Shaggy, and Scooby-Doo first met and began solving mysteries together. It premiered on Cartoon Network in the United States on September 13, 2009.
Unlike the 2002 theatrical film and its 2004 sequel, The Mystery Begins focuses on the characters during their teenage years and was produced as a television movie. Robbie Amell played Fred, Kate Melton played Daphne, Hayley Kiyoko played Velma, Nick Palatas played Shaggy, and Frank Welker supplied Scooby-Doo’s voice.
The title can be confused with later origin-focused Scooby-Doo projects, but the 2009 film is specifically the live-action Cartoon Network production. Its sequel, Scooby-Doo! Curse of the Lake Monster, followed in 2010.
