The first Just Dance game was released in 2009. Developed by Ubisoft Paris and published by Ubisoft, it launched for the Wii as a motion-controlled music game in which players copied an on-screen dancer’s choreography while holding a Wii Remote.
The idea grew from dance and pose-based minigames in Ubisoft’s Rayman Raving Rabbids series. Ubisoft turned that concept into a standalone title designed to be accessible to casual players and enjoyable in groups, rather than demanding the precision of traditional rhythm games with dance mats.
The original game received mixed reviews for simple gameplay and limited motion detection, but its approachable controls, recognizable soundtrack, and party-friendly format helped it become a commercial success. It sold more than 4.3 million copies worldwide and established one of Ubisoft’s most recognizable series.
A common mix-up is confusing the original release with later entries: Just Dance 2 arrived in 2010, while Just Dance 3 expanded the series to PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360. The franchise began on Wii in 2009.
