The Anna Wintour Costume Center at the Metropolitan Museum of Art was named in 2014.
The naming recognized Anna Wintour’s long relationship with the Costume Institute and her role in expanding the visibility and fundraising reach of its work. Wintour became a trustee of the Metropolitan Museum of Art and has been closely associated with the annual Costume Institute Benefit, commonly called the Met Gala.
The center is housed within the Met and contains the Costume Institute’s galleries, study areas, and collection resources. It is not a separate museum in another location. Its exhibitions and archival work support the study of fashion as art, history, and material culture.
A common mix-up is treating 2014 as the year Wintour became chair of the gala. She had chaired the event since 1995; 2014 is the year the Costume Center received her name.
