Spring Festival was inscribed on UNESCO’s Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity in 2024. UNESCO’s official entry calls it “Spring festival, social practices of the Chinese people in celebration of traditional new year.”
The inscription recognizes a broad group of living practices rather than a single ceremony or object. These include family reunions, festive foods, ancestor-related customs, seasonal decorations, community events and traditions passed between generations. The festival marks the beginning of the traditional Chinese lunisolar year and is celebrated in many Chinese communities worldwide.
A common mistake is to treat UNESCO inscription as a declaration that the festival began in 2024. It did not: the celebration has ancient roots. The 2024 date records when UNESCO’s Intergovernmental Committee added the cultural practices to the Representative List. It is also an intangible-heritage listing, not a World Heritage site designation for a physical location.
